Description This unit covers the competency required to use own cultural identity and knowledge to further organisational purposes in an operational setting in accordance with organisational policies and guidelines. Similar functions specifically for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander officers are covered in separate units.This unit replaces PUAPLO001B Assist police with members of a culturally specific community.

Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to a specialist officer whose own cultural identity and knowledge is used to further organisational purposes in line with organisational policies and guidelines.

  • Advice is given on cultural issues affecting police and members of a culturally specific community
  • Particular misunderstandings in communication between other police and members of a culturally specific community are identified and resolved
  • Interpreting and translating assistance is provided subject to organisational guidelines
       
Element: Consult with respected members and organisations of a culturally specific community
  • Problems in police relations with a culturally specific community are identified and discussed
  • Crime and social disorder concerns of the community are identified and reported to supervisors
  • Community suggestions are elicited and reported back to supervisors
  • Police service strategies are explained and feedback is reported to supervisors

There are no specific resource requirements for this unit.

Method of assessment

In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an industry-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:

direct observation

interviewing the candidate

journals and workplace documentation

third party reports from supervisors

written or oral questions.

Assessment Tasks
